Is it safe to drink?
Yes. Making hydrogen from tap water also creates small amounts of chlorine and ozone. The DOUSE H8 keeps them out of your drink with a DuPont N117 PEM membrane, and vents them out of the base through a gas release valve.
The bottle is made from BPA-free Tritan, and hydrogen itself is an approved food additive in the UK (E949). If you're pregnant or have a medical condition, check with your GP before starting anything new.
How do I know it's actually making hydrogen?
You'll see a cloud of fine bubbles rise during each cycle, and hear a small hiss of pressure when you open the lid. The 10-minute cycle reaches up to 3,000ppb.
If you'd like to measure it yourself, H2 Blue reagent drops, which you can buy online, show the concentration in your water.
Is there any real science behind hydrogen water?
Molecular hydrogen is being studied as a selective antioxidant, with human trials looking at areas such as inflammation markers, energy and exercise recovery. Some results are encouraging, but many studies are small and not every trial is positive.

How is it different from cheaper bottles?
Many low-cost bottles have no PEM membrane or gas release valve, so the chlorine and ozone made during electrolysis can stay in the water you drink. Their hydrogen levels are often lower too.
The DOUSE H8 has the parts that matter: a PEM membrane, a gas release valve, a pressure-sealed chamber and platinum-coated titanium electrodes, without the £200 to £300 price tag.
Why is it plastic rather than glass?
The chamber is sealed under pressure, which is what lets the water hold up to 3,000ppb. Glass isn't safe under that repeated pressure, so the bottle is made from BPA-free Tritan, a tough material chosen to handle it.
Why does it only hold 280ml?
Hydrogen starts escaping as soon as you open the lid, so the bottle is sized to drink in one sitting, within about 10 to 15 minutes. A bigger bottle would mean the last half had lost much of its hydrogen. A fresh batch takes 5 or 10 minutes whenever you want one.
Is it easy to use, and are there ongoing costs?
Fill it with cold or room-temperature water, press the button, and drink straight from the bottle when the cycle finishes. There are no filters, cartridges or refills to buy. One USB-C charge lasts about a week.
